In the 16th Century, Portugal became the first European country to create commercial routes to China to establish the tea trade.
In 1661, the Portuguese Princess Catarina de Bragança (Catherine of Braganza) married King Charles II of England and had to move up north to join the king. It was known at the time that the young queen-to-be was very fond of tea and was sipping on a daily basis. She even packed loose-leaf tea on her trip that which is believed to have been part of her dowry. A legend has it that the crates were marked Transporte de Ervas Aromáticas (Transport of Aromatic Herbs) which was later abbreviated to T.E.A. When Queen Catherine arrived in England, tea was being consumed as a medicine. However, the young queen continued her daily tea drinking habit, making tea a popular social beverage and installing the famous British tradition of having tea at five o’clock in the afternoon.
Enjoy a tea afternoon with us!
ROSA ET AL Townhouse is definitely the place to have a 5 o’clock high tea experience in Porto. Enjoy tea whether it is be with family and friends for the pleasure of the British tradition or as a catered meeting with work colleagues in our vintage dining room or amidst our aromatic garden. Pick anything from our tea and infusions selection and try the freshly-baked scones, the tea cakes and the mini sandwiches to make your afternoon better.
Famous for our tea collection, we are used to welcoming those who visit us just to try one of our teas. Fresh or dried, directly from our garden, there are plenty of options: melissa, sage, rosemary, mint, verbena, thyme or lavender. If you are looking for stronger and complex flavors then you must take a look at our extended tea selection with more than 40 tea infusions and blends from around the world including the only tea still grown in European territories, the famous Gorreana, grown in São Miguel in the Azores. It does not matter whether you prefer green or black, white or rooibos because we guarantee that we will have the right tea for you.
Our afternoon menu has delicious options and the biggest difficulty will be to decide what to taste. It will be impossible to resist our straight form the oven home-made scones with our seasonal jams and preserves, our fluffy pancakes with cream cheese and fruit (for some, they are the best in the world), our golden rabanadas (French toast-like Portuguese dish) or a slice of the daily tea cake. And to drink, you can enjoy our wide selection of teas and infusions, the daily juices or the afternoon alternative coffee fix. But, for the daring ones, a glass of Portuguese sparkling wine or a Portuguese craft beer can be the perfect match to wrap up any gathering before the evening starts.

ROIBOOS AND TISANES
While we tend to call anything we brew with hot water a ‘tea’, technically speaking, only the products of the Camellia Sinesis plant are teas.
Other plants and herbs commonly brew with hot water like chamomile, mint and Rooibos are not actually ‘teas’ because, well, they do not come from the tea plant. Thus, the correct term would be an ‘infusion’ or a ’tisane’.

BLACK
Black teas are made by picking the tea leaves then rolling and drying them.
The leaves are slightly bruised which causes them to become ‘oxidized’, as leaves start to ferment. The leaves become darker in color and causes the resulting brew to have that delicious, strong flavor and more of a caffeine kick than other teas. Thus, strong enough to take milk and sugar. Enjoy!
